Skaters and Residents Clash in Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach residents are battling it out with skateboarders in their community. Over 400 complaints and 11 reports of collisions have been reported in the last three years. Residents claim that the steep hills of Laguna Beach are too dangerous for speedboarding. The residents hope to ban speedboarding on many of the steep streets in their community.

On the flip side, speedboarders claim that such bans are unnecessary as serious speedboarders already take many safety precautions. They claim to have full control over their skateboards and can stop them faster than a cyclist can brake on their bicycles. Many speedboarders apparently support cracking down on skaters who don’t wear helmets and other protective gear. An outright ban is being resisted as there is not an alternative place for speedboarders to skate.

Today is a beautiful new day.  The skies are clear blue and we have a predicted high of 67° but… I can’t skate.  That’s right, I can’t skate.  Thursday during one of those “all -day” park sessions I hurt myself.  I can’t remember whether it was in the bowl on the Tien, trying that ridiculous shove-it on the skateboard, or kicking myself for not being able to pull off something… but I managed to bang up my knee.  It’s not the worst possible injury, but it will keep me off the board for a few days.

Safety is important.  I know it, you know it, and our mom’s especially know it.  Remember those geeky water wings as a kid?  Anyway it is a great idea to protect yourself.  If I had been wearing pads on Thursday maybe I would be skating today.  But who knows right?  I have found that alot of little injuries can bring you down as quickly as one big injury and a good set of pads plus a helmet can go a long way towards prolonging your sessions.  So check our Protective Gear in the shop and skate longer. Have fun and be safe!

longboardDuring the summertime I take every opportunity I can to soak up the sunshine. Opportunities to enjoy the warm weather are scarce in the Pacific Northwest, so it’s imperative to make the most of everyday. From June to August, my main conveyance is my longboard skateboard.

Not only does it give me a chance to enjoy the amazing Seattle summer, I also save money on gas, which is particularly nice during the summer, when gas prices tend to be there highest. The great thing about a longboard, as opposed to a bike or scooter, is that it’s also compact and convenient to carry. This allows me to easily take it into stores or restaurants or throw it in a cab if I don’t feel like skating back across town at the end of the day.

skateboardIn order to maximize your skateboarding experience, you’ll need to pick up a couple of skateboard accessories. One indispensable tool is a universal truck tool. This specially designed implement can do everything from tighten your trucks to replace your wheels, plus it’s compact and lightweight.

Another accessory you want to be sure to have at all times is some curb wax. This can be applied to curbs, rails and other surfaces to back grinds and boardslides smoother. There are literally hundreds of other products you can pick up, of course, but these two are essential.

What to Do When a Skateboard Splinters

brokenThose who skateboard regularly know that their equipment can wear out and break at the least convenient times. A deck might snap right in the middle of a gnarly boardslide, for example, leaving the trucks and wheels fully functional but useless for the time being. Likewise, bearings might become creaky and crusty, preventing the skateboarder from rolling down the street in style.

Luckily, skateboard decks are often sold separately from other equipment and supplies. The addition of trucks and wheels can be pricy, especially when they aren’t even needed. If you’ve been temporarily stalled from indulging in your passion for skateboarding, consider replacing your board as soon as possible. It’s an effective form of exercise as well as a mode of transportation.

Skateboarding has become ever so popular these days. It has become a part of our culture and is no longer just for punk kids. Skateboarding can be seen in television, movies, and now even on video games. In fact, one of the funnest video games I played when I was younger was Tony Hawk. It’s actually a skateboarding game. And now there are many versions of skateboarding games that can be played on videos. But for a person who has experienced skateboard like me, nothing beats the thrill of actual skateboarding.

So what does a skateboard consist of? Skateboards have come a long way, but your basic skateboard components consist of the skateboard deck, wheels and bearing, and the trucks, which hold the wheels. The deck itself is really important and is usually made of wood. However, more skateboard decks that are now available and are made from plastic composites. The main consideration for using this type of material is because of its flexibility. Also, the wider deck, the better. It provides ample space to do range of tricks. Majority of street skateboards are about 7-8 inches wide, while the trick skateboards are up to 10 inches. Grip tapes are used on decks too, as it helps to keep feet on the board. There are also several other skateboard accessories that you can pick up.
