Review: Sector 9 Sunset Longboard
The sector 9 sunset bamboo longboard is one of the newest editions to the sector 9 line-up. This board is the most high performance style bamboo longboard made by sector 9. The board is fast, smooth, sharp turning, and highly stable. The deck of the bamboo sunset uses a “W” concave with a mild camber which allows strength and still gives the longboard a little bit of flex. The trucks are top mounted on this board which give it the lowest center of gravity of any of the sector longboards. It is 42 inches long and 9.5 inches wide which is perfect for stability at high speeds and while carving down hills. The wheelbase is around 30 inches long which creates very smooth flowing turns. The nose and tail of the board are tapered to allow for large wheels that can get you over any type of riding surface. A low center of gravity board is very useful as it creates so much more balance on the board and also makes speed wobbles more scarce. It also makes sliding a lot easier as you are so much closer to the ground.
If you’re thinking about getting this sector 9 longboard make sure to set it up for ultimate performance. I would get the 10 inch gullwing charger trucks as the deck was designed perfectly so the trucks will sit flat on the top of the board. Either the sector 9 74mm wheels or some orangatang wheels are a good choice for this board as they will grip the ground and allow for great carves at high speeds. The sector 9 platinum bearings are a perfect fit for this bamboo longboard!
Sector 9 Waimea Bamboo Longboard Review
If you’re looking for a good cruising longboard that is easy to ride, smooth, and can turn great the sector 9 waimea is a great longboard for you! The board is 39.5 inches long and 9.375 inches wide which makes for a very stable ride and makes balancing on the board really easy, even for beginners. It has a “W” concave and a slight camber which adds strength to the board and still allows for a minimal amount of flex. It has a mid-sized wheelbase which is the distance from the front and back trucks which makes for smooth flowing turns. The waimea can even be used to bomb down hills if you really wanted to as it has a carver style shape that allows for good carving.
To maximize your smooth turns on this sector 9 bamboo longboard you should get the gullwing charger trucks as they are great carving trucks and provide more stability than most other longboard trucks. If you are just cruising the board around town and not doing in hill bombing I would recommend some nice 64-70mm sized wheels which will be fast and very smooth riding even on bumpy surfaces. A good bearing like abec 7 or bones reds will allow for easier riding and smoother turning so don’t cut yourself short with a cheap bearing for this board!
Hybrid Bamboo Skate Longboard
If you love the bamboo style longboards and are looking for a hybrid styled board look no further than the sector 9 laniakea bamboo longboard. This is a great cruiser style longboard that provides a somewhat standard skateboard shape with a tail. The tail makes turning much easier and ollies possible. This board wasn’t designed for carving or high speeds but it is a great board for commuting and also for beginner riders as it is smooth and easy to balance on. It is 36.75 inches long which makes for super sturdy board. It is fully constructed with 7 plys of bamboo wood which give it just a little bit of flex when riding.
This is one of the sector 9 longboards that doesn’t need any of the fancy components as it really is a true cruiser board. You can put on a standard style skate truck to keep the cost minimal with a smaller sized wheel from 60-65mm in size. If you are want to be able to cruise at faster speeds just get an upgraded bearing like some bones reds or something comparable.
Most Popular Sector 9 Bamboo Longboard
The bamboo series of longboards from sector 9 are all very popular but one of them seems to get the most attention. That board is the sector 9 haleiwa. This little longboard is a hybrid mix between bamboo series and sidewinder series unlike any other board in the sector 9 longboards series. It is fully constructed from 100% bamboo wood and is the same shape as the older sector 9 cosmic 1 shape. It can take turning to new levels with the sidewinder trucks and short wheelbase at under 2 foot long. The deck is 8.8 inches wide which gives you a good stable area for your feet when carving. The bamboo wood also allows for a little bit of flex in and out of turns which helps to maximize your speed.
The haleiwa sector 9 longboard should be set up with gullwing sidewinder trucks with no other substitutes if you are looking for a hard, sharp turning board. You also need a flat edged slalom style wheel when using the sidewinder trucks to allow for enough friction against the ground so you don’t slide around too much when turning. Any abec 5 or higher bearing will definitely do the trick with this little cruiser.
Mini Bamboo Longboard
The smallest sector 9 longboard is the bamboo series bambino mini longboard. This board is the same shape and size as the popular patches mini. Bamboo longboards have been gaining popularity for years and are probably the most popular type of longboard. The bambino is a great little cruiser that is super fast, smooth, and sharp turning. It has the shortest wheel base of all the sector 9 longboards at just 14.25 inches long. It is a great board for getting around town or campus as it is so small you can stash it away in your back pack or under your chair in class. It is constructed fully of 100% bamboo wood which is a great material for the environment.
The recommended set up for this sector 9 bamboo longboard is simple. You don’t need any fancy style trucks, wheels, or bearings as it really isn’t needed on this board. I would go with a simple standard truck and a smaller 60-65mm wheel. As for bearings you can set it up with some abec 5 bearings and it should be very quick and smooth.
Platinum downhill longboard
The #1 rated performing downhill sector 9 longboard has to be the kommi longboard. This board was built for speed, carving, and downhill performance and that’s it! It utilizes the popular drop through flush mount that sector 9 commonly uses to allow for a low center of gravity without taking away any of the deck for foot placement. The board is mid ranged at 38 inches in length and 9 inches wide. It has a 28.5 inch wheelbase which takes up almost the whole length of the deck which makes this longboard the best downhill board they make. The wheelbase is perfectly set up for sharp carving turns but with the trucks set up at the ends of the deck it also makes for a smoother controlled feel while carving. The board is also pressed from 8 plys, unlike the usual 7 of maple would which creates a nice stiff board which is really what you want for an ultimate downhill style board.
This board was designed for the gullwing charger trucks in 9 or 10 inches. I would personally say to put the 10 inch truck on it as it will allow for more stability when hitting toe side turns at high speeds. The 74mm sector 9 race formula wheels are a perfect match for this board. They will last a long time and are grippy while at the same time still just hard enough to last. The sector nine racing bearings were made for the sector 9 kommi longboard!
The platinum sector 9 longboard
The platinum series of sector 9 longboards are top of the line boards! For the most part they made for speed, downhill, and hard carving! The wedge longboard is one of the highest performing boards in the series. It is super light weight, with the perfect amount of flex for hard carves and good down hill stability. The board is 42 inches long and 9.25 inches wide which gives a nice stable platform for wicked speed and carving down hills. It is formed from mahogany, aspen, and fiberglass that forms a unique look and most of all feel. It is a great all around board that is possible one of the most unknown longboards in the sector 9 line-up.
The sector 9 wedge longboard should be set up with the best components as it is a high performance board. The gullwing chargers were designed to match up with this board perfectly and allow for great turns and high speed stability. I would probably put an abec 11 style wheel on this board as they tend to last longer than most other wheels when carving hard at high speeds down hills. As for bearings I wouldn’t do anything less than abec 7 to allow for the highest speeds possible. If you’re looking to maximize the boards capabilities put some bones ceramics as they are the fastest bearings known to man!
Hybrid Skate Longboard
Hybrid seems to be the word of the year! Except this time it isn’t talking about a car. It is however a means for transportation. The hybrid is also a longboard produced from arbor which is a company based out of southern california that makes snow and skateboards using environmentally friendly products. This board is called the hybrid as it serves several purposes; longboard stability and speed as well as flat ground and skate park performance. The hybrid board is super stiff with lots of pop and great concave. It is a great mix between skate and longboard.
The arbor hybrid longboard wasn’t designed for bombing hills or hard carves. It is a cruising style longboard that can also be taken to the skate park. So if you are going to be taking this board to the park make sure to get a harder wheel. However if you are looking to get this board primarily as a cruiser and commuter board set it up with some standard trucks and some 65-70mm sized wheels. An abec 5 bearing will do just fine on this board.
A state of Mind Longboard
The 2009 line up of arbor longboards has brought about several new boards. My favorite is definitely the new mindstate board. It is a compact flex styled longboard that is great for cruising and carving. This board was designed to create fun carves at you generate energetic rebounding turns with the flex pattern of the board. It has four plies of hardrock maple and reinforced with fiberglass to create strength and also give it the flexible feel while keeping the board light weight to maximize performance! The top layer of koa wood also helps add pop out of the turns giving it a very unique feel unlike any other longboard.
I prefer to keep the arbor mindstate longboard light weight as that is what it was designed for. A light high performance longboard truck is the randal r-ii downhill styled truck. A nice soft gushy grippy wheel from 65-70mm in size is perfect for this board and will help for optimal turns. Bones bearings are the best on the market and the bones reds are a great product for a great price so that is what I recommend for this board!
The NEW Arbor Slater Longboard
The kelly slater longboard has been discontinued and remodeled with the new 7-ply maple wood and koa top grain with a fish tail or swallow tail cut-out. This new styled board is very fast and provides the sharpest hardest carving board in the arbor carver series line-up. It offers the shortest wheelbase which allows for the harder carving sharp turns. The board is lightweight and high performing! The artist Jake Pickle desgined the board to represent Kelly Slaters life as a surfer, which is all about surfing, music, travel, and friends.
Don’t cut yourself short on the arbor kelly slater longboard. Make sure to equip this board with some good parts. Gullwing charger trucks in the white and blue color match up nicely with this board. Also add some 65mm arbor longboard wheels. For bearings I wouldn’t recommened anything lower than abec 7 and would prefer bones swiss bearings in this board for myself!
