Skateshops & Clubhouses
For as long as there have been skaters there has been a need for some form of skate shop. In the earlier days these consisted of “mom & pop” hardware stores as well as garages from which extraneous hardware and components were harvested. As the years and sport progressed the face of skate shops had evolved as well. These store fronts became a common ground for all shredders to fraternize and exchange information as well as techniques. It is an area for veterans to reminisce on simpler times and for groms to learn from the experienced. All skaters constantly welcome (skate, longboard, shortboard, freeride, downhill, etc.). I have been blessed and can say that I am lucky enough to spend most of my day aboard one of these “club houses” rubbing elbows with some of the most modest pioneers of the sport. Life is good.

Shred; this is defined as a strip of some material, that has been torn, ripped or scraped from some larger form. As longboarders we often use this term in relation to the action of shredding pavement. Shredders are often discriminated against for impeding traffic and creating a public nuisance on city streets. This leads to the stereotype that we are all menaces to society, when in reality we are your normal everyday people. Just because an individual enjoys a daily dose of adrenalin does not make them a miscreant. Time after time I am approached for “breaking the law” by authorities who come to find out I am not that bad of a guy. Yet we are still approached and treated like criminals. Hopefully sooner rather than later these folks will understand that the sport of downhill/freeride longboarding is here to stay.

IT BEGINS
The evolution of longboarding has grown exponentially as of its genesis less than 3 decades ago. I’m sure by now all of you shred heads have caught wind of Tyler “Danger” Gronseth who pioneered this monumental movement. He used his knowledge of skateboards as well as his love for the ride to create an entirely new take on a classic past time. His ability to improvise had literally conceived a fresh and innovative way to shred using a hand cut deck, trucks, wheels and less than reliable nails to press these components to one another. Since its birth, the sport has become a lifestyle and has morphed into a completely different entity. Free ride to downhill, boards have changed shape, speed and ply.

Spring into Shades!
Greetings from sunny Nor-Cal! Lately we have been lucky enough to have excellent winter shredding weather and so I decided to get out on the hill for the day. While we were hanging out enjoying the sunny weather and hiking the hill I had a great idea for today’s blog: Shades.
Eye protection from the sun has existed around the globe for thousands of years, however shades haven’t always been as stylish and protective as they are today.

It is always important to protect your health while out on your board. I mean, boarding for life sounds a lot more attractive than only boarding for a few years right? While our sport has a huge emphasis on safety due mainly to the higher speeds and increased danger of permanent injury, it is easy to forget when we suit up for riding that our eyes need protection too.

New Years Resolutions
Recently added Manufacturers
Its 2012 already and what year it has been for Longboarding! We’ve been seeing some amazing progression out there in the sport and are stoked to see what happens in the next 365 days. Last year we also witnessed a huge growth here at Boards on Nord with the addition of a few new brands including Bustin, Rayne, Jet, Riviera, and Palisades. We can’t say thank you enough to our customers and readers like you who support us and the sport. With all this growth and progression happening to everyone, and a little downtime after the crazy holiday season, we started thinking about how much this sport is about community. I’m serious, just look at any Longboarding magazine (e.g. Concrete Wave,Skate[Slate] ) and you’ll see the massive community gatherings that begun to pop up everywhere. Anyways, in honor of all this growth and to show our support for the community that supports us we have decided that our New Year’s Resolution here at the shop is to get more involved in the local community by hosting more events like the Chico Big Push we organized last September. We will be working to come up with some fun community ideas so stay tuned for future updates as we make plans. See you on the hill soon!

Cheap Longboards
Ok so the term cheap longboards gives me mixed feelings. Inexpensive is probably a better word. As cheap just makes something sound crappy. Why would someone just want a cheap longboard? Doesn’t sound like much fun, in fact kinda sounds scary to bomb a hill at 50 plus on a cheap longboard.
If you’re looking for a cheap longboard then check out stella longboards, for the price they are awesome boards. But if you want a more high performance board check out Sector 9, Landyachtz, Rayne or something in that range, you can still get a great deal on a higher end board.
Word of the day…Longboards
Longboards not yet recognized as a “word” in the English language. Yet a major aspect of America culture today. Yeah, that’s correct a MAJOR factor in the culture of modern America. I can say this with a strong belief in the statement, with no questioning it in my heart what so ever. Back in the summer of 2005 I wouldn’t have had the same belief. I was 22 years old living in Santa Barbara in a 2 bedroom apartment with roommate Chris and his older brother, Pete. And of course I can’t for get to mention Willie slept on the lower of the stadium seating couches that spring semester. We were only a block from City College and a block from the beach. It was the best time in my life up to that point.
That was the summer I also met my beautiful soon to be wife, Krystle. And I wouldn’t even be writing this today if it wasn’t for her hard-work and encouragement that helped us start our business. She also stuck through that summer where I was arrested and faced up to a possible 5 years in prison. Yikes, that could have sucked! Thank the Lord Almighty for bringing me out of that with no jail time.
But anyways back to Longboards. I’m just gonna list a few brand names; Sector 9, Randal, Gravity, Abec 11, Loaded, Orangatang and so many other’s. These are brands that through a downturn economy are going strong, innovating and making American made products for an affordable price and consumers are eating these products for Breakfast! Every college campus through out the country is a cruising billboard for each of these brands. But yet when I type the word, longboards on my computer it’s highlighted by a red squiggle line. Come on Microsoft! There’s a word you guys need to learn.
Kids Are Clamoring For Edgier Alternatives
With the arrival of alternative sports, more and more kids and young adults seem to clamor for edgier competition venues. Somehow, a regular sports arena just doesn’t cut it anymore. Known for being more adventurous and therefore dangerous, alternative sports promoters are finding themselves holding competitions at the most unlikely of places. For example, street roller skate races are held just about anywhere there’s a stretch of road available. Whether it be uphill or downhill doesn’t seem to matter.
Longboarders in particular are not picky X-gamers. Give them a street and a downhill longboard and an abandoned pool and they’re good to go. The edgier the location, the better. Armed with their elbow pads, their helmets and their roller skates, they’re raring to go at the mark. They’re not called X-gamers for nothing of course.
