Just Bamboo It

bamboo-longboardsAlthough bamboo has been utilized by Asian cultures for centuries, it’s just beginning to recognize global ubiquity. The chow mien you order every Friday from your favorite Chinese restaurant probably contains some stir-fried bamboo shoots. Or that new shiny hardwood floor in your neighbor’s house? That could be bamboo. Just the other day I was shopping around online and found bamboo longboards.

Many animals around the world, including humans, use bamboo. The giant panda and the red panda depend on bamboo for their survival. Bamboo isn’t very nutritious, so both the giant and the red panda have to eat more than 4,500 kg of bamboo each year. Throughout history, bamboo has remained one of the most used plants in the world. The fiber in a bamboo stem is so strong that bamboo can be used to construct bridges and buildings.

Summer Skateboard Posses

arbor-longboardsEver since I was little, I’ve lived on a plateau just outside of Seattle. We’re just minutes from the foothills of the Cascades, and we certainly share some of their geographical features. Aside from the several thousand-foot climb to the top of the plateau, steep hills are strewn throughout the landscape.

During the winter, this terrain is incredibly treacherous, but it lends itself well to summertime diversions. This time every year, there are droves of people riding Arbor longboards down the steep hills. Although it’s been several years since I tackled those hills myself, I’ve noticed that—much like when I was a kid—longboarders tend to roll in packs.

Arbor Koa Wood Pintail Longboard

The Koa wood pintail Arbor longboards is perfect for getting around town, or carving up the parks. one of the cool things about the koa wood is that it’s a lot more flexible than maple (the common wood used in longboards) so arbor makes the top layer out of koa which is not only super flexible and durable but is also gives the board a cool texture. The Arbor Koa also has an oversized wheelbase, which is perfect for downhill, and the smoothest longest turns you will ever experience.

The Arbor Koa goes perfect with the san clemente trucks and wheels, as well as the normal abec 5 bearings. The Arbor Koa however goes perfect with gullwing chargers, bombers for trucks, orangutangs and sector 9’s for wheels. Also for bearings Sector 9 ceramic bearings as well as reds are perfect for any situation. I recommend the Arbor koa wood to anyone looking for a versatile cruiser.

Longboard Skateboard

Due to release in early sping 2010 are the new arbor longboard skateboards. A lot of new editions and changes are being made this time around. I’m very excited to check out all the new skates coming out and to demo them. Some of the changes to this years boards are several new shapes/styles as well as the carry over boards as always but with some cool new graphics. Lets start with the mini longboard skateboard called the pocket rocket, not too much has changed other than the graphic. The biggest change is the new assorted colored bottom graphic with 4 new colors on the bamboo version as well as a new bamboo board itself. The sizzler is going to have 2 colorways this year blue and red. One of the biggest changes is the remake of the older bogart board. One of the other new changes arbor is making is some boards with black grip tape with arbor logo die-cuts.

The biggest surprise for the longboard skateboards from arbor is the arbor axis which is a drop through top mount that is awesome looking. The axis skate is 40″ long and 8.5″ wide a great all around style board available in both koa and bamboo wood. Also a similar board called the assault with some of the black grip with a koa die cut will be coming out as a drop through top mount. It is a little longer at 42″ and a little wide at 8.75″ for someone that wants that little extra stability. These boards should start showing up in shops in early march, 2010.

Cheap Longboards from Sector 9, Loaded and More!

Cheap Longboards

So you’re looking for a longboard but don’t want to spend too much money. Well the best way to keep it cheap is to buy a customizable longboard. This way you can get some components that aren’t too high end. One big thing to keep in mind are the trucks. The truck is something you don’t want to be too cheap about as they are what allow the board to turn and manuver so well. Very cheap longboard trucks just don’t perform that great. It is well worth the extra $10 to upgrade to  a good higher end truck. You can always get a cheaper wheel and bearing that still performs great.

An amazing set up for a beginner would be pretty much any sector 9, or arbor longboard set up with some gullwing mission or gullwing charger trucks and some simple rush abec 5 bearings. Rush abec 5 bearings are some of the best abec 5 bearings available and are very comparable to bones reds in my opinion. The next thing to keep in mind are the wheels, you can get a good cheap longboard wheel. Just make sure to get something in the 65-70mm size range minimum. Remember the larger wheels are going to feel a little faster and smoother but some boards don’t allow for too large of wheel. If you need help setting up your board for a cheaper price just post your question on here and I’ll help you out.

Longboards from all the top brands like sector 9, arbor, loaded, landyachtz, gravity and more!

Sector 9 has just recently updated their entire line of longboards. Some of the newest additions are the carbonite longboard which was made to perform. It is light weight and utilizes the drop through mount for a lower center of gravity. It is 41″ long and 9.25″ wide a great board for any style riding. Another new addition is the Bullet which is made for speed and downhill riding. It has an extra ply of maple for stiffness and stability. 2 other boards in their line up are the bamboo ghost tree which is a completely new shape you got to check out as well as the cosmic series deserts longboard.

Make sure to get your longboard set up the way you want it and that will best fit your needs. Every one is so different when it comes to what they want these days. If you’re a beginner you might just want something simple with a cheaper price with no need for the best components so make sure you get exactly that. If you are advanced you might want to up your game and aren’t looking for stock components anymore as you want to pass your friends, go faster, slide farther, and carve harder.

Qualities of an Effective Longboards

arbor-longboardsAs is the case with many sports, skateboarding culture has evolved to the point where certain companies specialize in skate-specific clothing. However, in the alternative-influenced world of skateboarding, Nike and Adidas are hardly the dominant forces in apparel and footwear. Instead the market is filled with smaller niche companies that produce comfortable clothing and striking, durable longboards.

Arbor longboards provide a perfect example as they feature a flashy, stylish board made with quality hard rock maple wood.  Longboard fashion is just as pronounced in the skating world as it is in any sport, but the sport takes an even larger toll on the boards. In order to perform some tricks, skaters must slide their shoe along harsh grip tape, which can create significant wear and tear over time. As a result, it’s best to select a shoe that balances fashion and function.

Arbor fish koa review

The Arbor koa fish longboard has got to be one of the best speed boards made by arbor, it may not have great handling but it makes up for that by being one of the fastest boards you will EVER ride. This is one of thos face melter boards… you know? the ones that will make you jealous every time you see someone dart past you, the board itself is pretty awesome.

the koa fish comes with those lame san clemente trucks and wheels but I recommend getting sidewinder trucks for this board. I don’t much recommend it for downhill anyways but it CAN be used for it and if you do decide to do it i would recommend the chargers or bombers. Also if you decide to get some bangin’ new bearings I recommend reds or sector 9 ceramics.
