Bamboo Floater Longboard
While the rest of the world is just discovering new uses for bamboo, skateboarders have long been aware of bamboo’s amazing property. For example, Gold Coast bamboo longboards have been described as classic “like a t-shirt and jeans.” In particular, the Gold Coast classic bamboo floater longboard is an industry mainstay.
The 44 inch pintail is good to go wherever, whenever. It has 71mm wheels that provide comfortable cruising, even when going over bumps. Printed grip tape on the premium bamboo will keep you riding in style.
Spring into Shades!
Greetings from sunny Nor-Cal! Lately we have been lucky enough to have excellent winter shredding weather and so I decided to get out on the hill for the day. While we were hanging out enjoying the sunny weather and hiking the hill I had a great idea for today’s blog: Shades.
Eye protection from the sun has existed around the globe for thousands of years, however shades haven’t always been as stylish and protective as they are today.
Some of the earliest protective eyewear consisted of a narrow slit cut into a solid lens which functioned more to restrict the quantity of light reaching the eye than to restrict the intensity of it (like with modern sunglasses). The first tinted modern glass lenses were developed around 1752 by James Ayscough who was experimenting with tint colors in an attempt to correct certain visual impairments. Not until much later was the fashion appeal of sunglasses evident. In the early 1900s, shortly after the birth of film and cinema, movie stars wearing shades to prevent fans from recognizing them began to explode the popularity of the eye accessory. In 1936 Edwin H. Land began producing the first polarized lenses for glasses while experimenting with his patented Polaroid Filter. More recent developments for shades also include the use of advanced materials in the lenses, such as polycarbonate, to strengthen and reduce the weight of the lenses. It is always important to protect your health while out on your board. I mean, boarding for life sounds a lot more attractive than only boarding for a few years right? While our sport has a huge emphasis on safety due mainly to the higher speeds and increased danger of permanent injury, it is easy to forget when we suit up for riding that our eyes need protection too.
Beyond just protecting your eyes from UV rays, the right shades will increase your performance by reducing glare, meaning better visibility, and even making you look cooler as you shred down the hill. If you are looking for a great deal on that new pair of shades for this season then check out our Webstore’s fantastic selection of eyewear from manufacturers like Electric, Spy, and Von Zipper.Until the next post have fun shredding and keep the stoke!

New Years Resolutions
Its 2012 already and what year it has been for Longboarding! We’ve been seeing some amazing progression out there in the sport and are stoked to see what happens in the next 365 days. Last year we also witnessed a huge growth here at Boards on Nord with the addition of a few new brands including Bustin, Rayne, Jet, Riviera, and Palisades. We can’t say thank you enough to our customers and readers like you who support us and the sport. With all this growth and progression happening to everyone, and a little downtime after the crazy holiday season, we started thinking about how much this sport is about community. I’m serious, just look at any Longboarding magazine (e.g. Concrete Wave,Skate[Slate] ) and you’ll see the massive community gatherings that begun to pop up everywhere. Anyways, in honor of all this growth and to show our support for the community that supports us we have decided that our New Year’s Resolution here at the shop is to get more involved in the local community by hosting more events like the Chico Big Push we organized last September. We will be working to come up with some fun community ideas so stay tuned for future updates as we make plans. See you on the hill soon!

The term “longboard” can be used to describe both surfing longboards and skateboarding longboards. Kids Are Clamoring For Edgier Alternatives
With the arrival of alternative sports, more and more kids and young adults seem to clamor for edgier competition venues. Somehow, a regular sports arena just doesn’t cut it anymore. Known for being more adventurous and therefore dangerous, alternative sports promoters are finding themselves holding competitions at the most unlikely of places. For example, street roller skate races are held just about anywhere there’s a stretch of road available. Whether it be uphill or downhill doesn’t seem to matter.
Longboarders in particular are not picky X-gamers. Give them a street and a downhill longboard and an abandoned pool and they’re good to go. The edgier the location, the better. Armed with their elbow pads, their helmets and their roller skates, they’re raring to go at the mark. They’re not called X-gamers for nothing of course.
The Extreme Sports Phenomenon
Extreme sports have been popular with preteens and teenagers for several decades now. The trend began with surfing and skateboarding, long boarding and snowboarding and rollerblading caught on shortly thereafter. Kids are naturally drawn to activities that are new and exciting, so it’s no wonder that they are eager to latch onto the latest trend.
Conscientious parents aren’t always keen on the idea of their kids hopping on a skateboard, even longboards and bombing a vert ramp with total abandon. The best way to forestall this issue is to substitute a child’s dangerous desires with safer forms of fun. While the design has changed drastically over the years, roller-skating remains a mainstay in extreme sports. You can even find skate shoe models now that have wheels built-in.
Holiday Help for Extreme Sports Enthusiasts
If you have a snowboarding, parasailing, sky diving, skateboard enthusiast on your holiday list this season, here are a few gift ideas sure to slake their desire for extreme sports.
Snowboarding Goggles – no snowboarder should be without a good set of goggles, which can range in price from twenty to several hundred dollars.
Skateboard Wheels – if your skateboarder uses their board frequently, they’ll probably go through wheels like nobody’s business; it’s always nice to have extras at the ready.
Extreme Sports Video Games – whether they like off road ATVing, skiing, or rollerblading, you’ll find a game out there sure to help occupy those rare times when they’re not outdoors (also great for unfortunate sport related injuries!)
IPod – no extreme sports enthusiast should be without their music, an integral component of building adrenaline.
Replacing Your Skateboard Parts
There are a lot of things to replace when you are a skateboarder. Regardless if you are a professional boarder or just do it for fun. With everything, something always has to get replaced. Skateboard parts wear out over time, when you use it all the time.
A few parts that are in need of replacement are the wheels, the board itself as well as skateboard bearings. Bearings run down and it can really mess up your boarding experience. Keeping consistent with replacing skateboard parts is an important responsibility.
Setting the Pace
It’s in most children’s nature to follow trends. Before we figure out what we want to be, we imitate the actions of others. This doesn’t entirely explain the popularity of extreme sports – they do provide an exhilarating thrill, after all – but it comes close. There will always be a huge mass of followers, but only a select few kids actually set the trends and lead the pack.
Skate shoes are a cutting-edge alternative to skateboards and traditional roller blades. When not in use, they take up much less room in a kid’s backpack and they light up for nighttime demonstrations. It’s no surprise that skate shoes for skateboards have begun to catch on at middle schools across the country. After all, the cool kids have given these extreme skates their stamp of approval.
